Mar 2, 2024 Understandably, there is a lot of curiosity about what the process of an Autism and ADHD assessment involves for children, and the internet is saturated with often contradictory information. There are certain things that are required to ensure a high quality Autism or ADHD assessment. These include the need to follow the relevant NICE Guidelines (which can be found **[here](https://www.nice.org.uk/guidance/ng87)** and **[here](https://www.nice.org.uk/guidance/cg128)**). These state that Autism assessments should be done by a multi-disciplinary team which includes a paediatrician and/or child and adolescent psychiatrist, a speech and language therapist, and a psychologist with experience and training working with Autistic children. When exploring ADHD, a specialist psychiatrist, paediatrician or other appropriately qualified healthcare professional should complete the assessment. ![Autism assessment York](https://www.parkpsychologyservices.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2024/03/Autism-assessment-york.webp "Autism-assessment-york - Park Psychology Services York") Park Psychology’s Autism assessments involve a consultant child and adolescent psychiatrist, a speech and language therapist and a clinical psychologist. Our ADHD assessments involve both a clinical psychologist and a consultant child and adolescent psychiatrist. All of Park Psychology’s clinicians have significant experience in Autism and ADHD. A detailed developmental history should be completed with the child’s parents or carers. This includes gathering information from pregnancy and the child’s early years, as well as finding out information about their physical and emotional wellbeing. Current differences or difficulties are also explored with parents or carers. Gathering information about the child’s experience of school is an important part of the process; consideration should be given to the possibility that a child may ‘mask’ their differences or difficulties in such environments. Where a child is not attending school, there should ideally be thought given to how they experience other contexts. Seeing the child in person is also a very valuable part of a good assessment; often this part includes some games and activities and sometimes children are asked to complete a computer based activity. It also gives the team an opportunity to get to know the child better. There is much more to a good assessment than this, however. A good assessment should allow space for both you and your child to feel heard. It should be a collaborative process whereby you bring expertise about yourselves and your child, and the clinicians involved bring their expertise in Autism/ADHD. We recognise that often people have waited a long time for their assessment, and feel it is important that people leave each appointment feeling understood and validated. Assessments should also seek to fully understand your child, which includes their strengths, hopes and wishes as well as exploring the challenges and difficulties they may be experiencing. You and your child’s voice should be at the heart of the process. Assessments should also be detailed and thorough, enabling other services (including NHS services) to see clearly that the process has followed best-practice guidelines, and has evidenced why an outcome was reached, leaving no doubt about the quality of the assessment or the validity of a diagnosis where this is given. Although a lot of information will be gathered as part of the process, this should be done at a pace that is comfortable for you. You should never feel rushed in appointments, and should feel at the end that you have been given the opportunity to share everything you wanted to. At Park Psychology, we ask if you would like the parental history part of the assessment to be split over two appointments, given its length and level of detail. If there are adaptations that can be made to help you and/or your child feel comfortable, then we will do our best to put these in place. For example, some children find it helpful to see where their appointment will take place, and who will be doing it; we can provide social stories, including photos to help with this. A good assessment has the potential to be a powerful intervention in and of itself. However, support after an assessment should also be offered; we provide this in both comprehensive, personalised recommendations included within your report, and we also offer individual therapeutic support following an assessment. If there is anything else you feel would be helpful, we would be happy to discuss this too. At Park Psychology Services, we are passionate about collaborating with children and their families. We do all we can to ensure a positive and helpful experience and it is our privilege to work in this area. If you feel we can be of help, please get in touch with us. We are based in York. You are more than welcome to have an assessment if you live further away; please note that one appointment always takes place face to face at our office space. #### What age range do you work with? We work with both adults and children; we can explore autism with children aged four and above, and ADHD with children aged six and above. For autism assessments we will consider assessing children between 4 and 6 if they have had input from a paediatrician. Ordinarily our assessments exploring autism and/or ADHD start from the age of 6 upwards. #### Which professions will be involved in my assessment? We have a growing multi-disciplinary team that currently includes Clinical Psychology, Consultant Psychiatry and Speech and Language Therapy. We involve professionals that will compliment each assessment and this will be discussed with you during the screening appointment. #### Do you automatically share reports with my GP? No, you decide who your report is shared with. #### Do I need a referral? No, you do not need a referral to seek an assessment or therapeutic support with us. We do accept referrals from GPs, other healthcare professionals or schools, alongside self-referrals. #### I find certain adjustments help me to feel comfortable in appointments; can you incorporate these into the assessment process? Absolutely. #### I am a parent seeking an assessment for my child, but I am separated from my child's other parent; how does the assessment work? Legally, the consent of one parent is needed to proceed with an assessment; however, we **strongly recommend** that both parents are aware and involved in the assessment. We can facilitate separate parental discussions if this is helpful for you and your family without extra charge. #### Do I need to tell my child about the assessment? Helping a young person to understand why they are coming to the appointment often helps them to feel comfortable to engage with the process and it also often enables them to feel able to share their perspectives on their strengths and difficulties. #### When do I pay for my assessment? We require payment at the time of booking in order to confirm pre-assessment consultation appointments. If you decide to proceed to a full assessment after the pre-assessment consultation appointment, we require a £250 booking deposit (taken off the cost of the assessment fee) to secure the appointments, and the balance of the assessment fee must be paid no later than 14 days before the first appointment. Please see our [fees page](https://www.parkpsychologyservices.co.uk/fees/) for our current fees. #### If I pay for a neurodevelopmental assessment, does this guarantee I will receive a diagnosis? We complete thorough, collaborative assessments that explore whether a person’s experiences can be understood through neurodivergence. This sometimes leads to a diagnosis as an outcome, but on other occasions, the team may conclude that the evidence does not suggest that your experiences can be understood through neurodivergence. The outcome of the assessment will be shared with you and the reasons behind this will be explained. Regardless of the outcome of the assessment, a comprehensive report will be written and shared with you, which will include recommendations to support you going forward. #### If I receive a diagnosis of ADHD, I would like to explore medication. Is this something you can provide? We have links with independent prescribing services, both for children and adults who do receive an ADHD diagnosis with us. These services are separate to ours and we do not have any responsibility for prescribing or managing ADHD medication. The determination of whether medication can be offered, and is suitable for an individual, is the responsibility of a General Practitioner (GP), a qualified Psychiatrist or other specialist prescriber. #### If I receive a diagnosis from an assessment, will this be accepted by NHS Services? We have an excellent track record of services, including NHS services and local authorities, accepting our assessments, conclusions and reports. However, we cannot guarantee acceptance by external bodies, which may have their own criteria and policies for recognising diagnostic reports. We recommend discussing specific requirements with any relevant third party prior to commencing the assessment process with us. #### I am an adult seeking an assessment but I do not have anybody such as a parent who could provide information to inform the assessment; is this a problem? It is always best if an assessment can include the views of both you and someone who has known you from childhood; this can be a sibling or friend, or a parent. However, if it is not possible to include an informant in the assessment, then this would not mean an assessment could not happen. Please contact us for more information if this is something you are concerned about. #### Please can I see your terms and conditions? During the consultation, we explore your questions and concerns, gather background information, share information about our approach and decide together which type of assessment is best for you or your child. ## How are Park Psychology Service’s Assessments NICE Guideline Compliant? - Assessments have gold standard, evidence based tools at their heart. - The team gather information from different settings (such as school, after-school club, or college), with your consent. For adults, this may include talking to any significant partners/family with your consent to help get a full picture. - We work as a multidisciplinary team, meaning that we seek the opinion and guidance of more than one clinician. - Clinicians who work with Park Psychology are experienced and qualified who understand neurodivergence, such as Autism, ADHD and also understand those who mask. We are also LQBTQ+ affirmative. Our clinicians are members of their respective regulatory bodies and work in accordance with their professional guidelines. - The team work together to consider other explanations, and differential diagnoses. ![](https://www.parkpsychologyservices.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2024/03/Park-Psychology-Services9.webp "Park Psychology Services9 - Park Psychology Services York") ## A Neuroaffirmative Approach A fundamental part of the Park Psychology approach is the understanding that neurodivergent minds are a different neurotype, and that being autistic or having ADHD does not mean that there is anything ‘wrong’ with the person. Collectively, we benefit from different brains and different ways of seeing the world. How boring life would be if we all understood things in the same way! A neuroaffirmative approach does not in any way minimise or ignore the challenges people may experience. We seek to understand the whole person through our assessment process, including the person’s strengths and hopes as well as validating and highlighting the challenges they may experience. We know that these challenges often arise because the world is not always designed to nurture neurodivergence and difference. We use identity-first language by default in order to reflect the preferences of most neurodivergent people. This means that we will refer to a person as ‘being autistic’ rather than as ‘being a person with autism’ (an example of person-first language). This reflects the idea that autism is an important part of a person’s identity. We are continually striving to improve the experience of people seeking to understand themselves through a neurodevelopmental assessment. We hope you will find our service to be a validating and affirming experience, we are here to support you through your assessment and identification journey. Please do get in touch if you have any further questions. ### Read more about the assessment process using the buttons below. This is sent to you to review; please note, we are able to amend any factual inaccuracies, but are unable to change other aspects of the assessment report. ![Forest light](https://www.parkpsychologyservices.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2024/03/firsest-light-landon-parenteau-D0pMST46enU-unsplash.jpg "firsest-light-landon-parenteau-D0pMST46enU-unsplash - Park Psychology Services York") ![butterfly](https://www.parkpsychologyservices.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2024/03/butterfly-aarn-giri-IBhsB71R97k-unsplash.jpg "butterfly-aarn-giri-IBhsB71R97k-unsplash - Park Psychology Services York") ## ADHD Assessment Process for Children 1. **Pre-Assessment Consultation –** This takes place for all people, BEFORE starting a full assessment. During the consultation, we explore your questions and concerns, gather background information, share information about our approach and decide together which type of assessment is best for you. 2. **School Observation** – For primary school children, we observe the person in school to more fully understand their presentation across contexts. For secondary school age children, we find that it is more beneficial to ask a member of staff who knows the person well to provide information about their presentation in that context. We also ask teachers to complete some evidence-based questionnaires. We know that people sometimes present differently in different contexts and that this can mean that differences are less easily picked up in certain environments. Please be reassured that we are mindful of this as a team and this is something we can discuss as part of the pre-assessment consultation should you wish. We also recognise that many neurodivergent young people struggle in school settings, and some are home-educated. In this case we will discuss who else may be able to support this part of the process. 3. **Face to Face Appointment** – This appointment takes place at one of our clinic rooms. We complete a computer-based assessment called a QbCheck and a Cognitive Assessment. 4. **Multidisciplinary Team Meeting** – The Team meet to consider all of the information we have gathered during the assessment process and to determine the outcome of the assessment. 5. **Feedback Discussion** – This is an online appointment, where we meet to share and discuss the outcome of the assessment. 6. **Report** – A comprehensive report is written, detailing all aspects of the assessment process, and giving recommendations to support you. This is done by asking a member of staff who knows the young person well to complete some evidence-based questionnaires. We know that young people sometimes present differently in different contexts and that this can mean that differences are less easily picked up in certain environments. For some, a diagnosis confirms what a person already knows about themselves, but for others, it may be a shock. Often, people can be left with conflicting feelings that can be difficult to navigate. Therapeutic support offers a space to help process and make sense of these emotions, and to understand neurodivergence and what this means to you. It provides a safe space to explore aspects of ourselves and often helps us to enhance our quality of life. We offer individual support with a clinical psychologist both in person in York, and online. Sessions are between fifty minutes and one hour in length. Please note, you do not need a diagnosis to access this support and we work with people who self-identify as being neurodivergent, or who wonder whether they may be. We also provide therapeutic support to people with a learning disability. We are passionate about adapting how we work to best meet the needs of the person accessing support; this might include providing information visually, or having a movement break in the session, for example. We are always eager to hear about any adaptations you feel we could make to help you feel comfortable. Please contact us for further information in relation to therapeutic support, or to book an appointment.
